Lotus Notes 8.5.2 Slow to Start

Category Fun Lotus Gossip

The esteemed Mr. Mooney posted about rebuilding his Macbook, and mentioned that Lotus Notes took 13.4 seconds to load. I just had to respond with this video.

Yes, I'm playing assholio, but it is all meant in fun.

Yes, the startup time for Lotus Notes is real. No, nothing was preloaded. Yes, it is version 8.5.2 Standard-the normal Gold release, no BP only "tuned release here. It is running on Windows 7 64bit. Nothing fake, no trickery or sleight of hand at all.

The reason for the speed is simply due to using high end equipment. Specifically: a Dell M6400 Precision Workstation (laptop) with an Intel QX9300 Quad Core processor, 16 Gig of RAM, and dual drives -1 7200RPM 320G Hitachi for data / backups / VM images / etc, and 1 120G OCZ SSD for O/S and heavily used (like Notes) applications.

Tequila, Travel, and the morning Nathan bought me 12 ounces of Mexican Coke

Category Fun Travel Gossip

After four weeks on the road, I was ready to head home. Last Friday, after finishing up at my customer's site, I jumped into the rental car and began the long drive back to Canton. My flight out of ATL wasn't until Saturday, and Nathan had graciously offered his guest room to me for the evening. Sitting in the trunk of the car was a gift bottle of my favorite tequila. The drive was going to take 6 to 7 hours.

I won't boor you with the details of the drive; suffice to say that I arrived safe and sound at Nathan's. He really appreciated the gift (he knows his tequila). After relaxing and talking for a while, I was ready for bed.

Saturday morning was a beautiful day. After dropping off the rental car, we had breakfast at a tiny little hole-in-the-wall Mexican restaurant. I had a Chorizo and egg burro, with a couple bottles of Jarritos Lime. As we were leaving I noticed they also carried MEXICAN COKE (flavored with real cane sugar). Nathan noted my excitement, and bought me a bottle.

The drive back to Nathan's house, through the curving tree lined roads of Canton, riding shotgun in his convertible Miata, with the sun shining in my face and the wind blowing in my hair, all the while sipping my Coke, is a memory worth keeping. T hanks for your hospitality Nathan, it means a lot to me.

Yes, I know the title of this post is somewhat misleading. If you have a problem with that you need to relax. Might I suggest some tequila, or perhaps some Coke?

Innocence Lost

I'm not really sure how I feel about this.

On the one hand, regardless of how I may feel about the stupidity of our current "anti-drug" laws, recreational marijuana use is illegal. On the other hand, the thought of this classy lady sparking up brightens my day.

I am curious as to why the only media coverage I've found on this was filed from Beijing.

BleedYellow Logging Sametime Chats!

QuickImage Category Gossip BleedYellow Lotus

Apparently posting an excerpt from a chat session the other day was a poor idea. It seems some folks in the community are now concerned that BleedYellow is logging Sametime chats.

Now, What can I say to make things perfectly clear, so there is absolutely no confusion whatsoever? Hmmmm. Oh, I know!

Lotus911 is not, nor have they ever, nor will they ever, log BleedYellow Sametime chats. Period. (I grabbed the excerpt from my own client on my own desktop.) Any questions?

Sheesh. Some folks are just way too paranoid.

Did he really just say that?

"The 2008 Olympics in Beijing will be a spectacle like we've never seen; the Chinese are very good at controlling their people and making them do what they want."

I'm pretty sure Bob will be getting a "talking to" before the next session.

I've dealt with GoDaddy in the past. Regardless of how you may feel about their advertising antics, they are one heck of a pleasure to work with.

Rodriguez & Tarantino serve up explosions, machine guns, and hot chicks on motorcycles.

Who could ask for anything more?

As I have pointed out in the past, Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez are on my list of favorite film makers. (They are #s 2 and 3 respectively). Both of them are highly intelligent, eloquent, and truly understand what makes a good movie. They also score very high on the badassometer. I think if you put them together with John Wayne, Clint Eastwood, and a bag of beef jerky you could pretty much take over the world.

I just found out about their upcoming 2 film Grindhouse project; and boy oh boy am I ever excited. The films are called Planet Terror (Rodriguez) and Death Proof (Tarantino). Years ago I worked at a Drive In theatre; and this project is perfect Drive In fare. Grindhouse opens April 06, 2007.

I'll be in the front row with my popcorn (unless I can find a Drive In around here).

P.S. The Grindhouse preview is available here.

Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse

Four Horsemen

Hell just froze over

Who would have guessed this 10 years ago? Or even 1 1/2 years ago, when Ozzie spoke at Lotusphere? My my my, the world does indeed move quickly.

Don't get your panties in a knot, the Four Horsemen crack is a joke. I know these can't be the real Horsemen, none of them is wearing red.

A Perfect Couple

QuickImage Category Gossip

Liz Olsen and Rob Novak are getting married today near Marco Island, Florida. I say "near" because they will actually having their ceremony on a sailboat offshore. I've got to hand it to Rob, the dude definately has class. My best wishes to the newlyweds for a wonderful, long, and happy life together.

I met Rob 3 or 4 years ago at a technical conference, although I'm pretty we crossed paths several years before that. The Lotus "community" is pretty small, and when you've been involved in it for many years, you start to "re-meet" folks. Rob is president of SNAPPS, and is also a technical editor for Lotus Advisor magazine.

I met Liz Olsen at the June 2002 Advisor DevCon in Las Vegas, Nevada. She is a managing editor for Lotus Advisor Magazine, and is one of the people who provided me with a much needed "kick in the ass" careerwise a while back. In addition to her editorial work, she is also a contributing writer.

I think these two make a wonderful couple. If you've seen them together you know what I mean, they "fit" each other. Congratulations to both of them.

Now, I wonder who else is getting married soon?

Not Guilty...

QuickImage Category Gossip

...but still freaky.

One of the jury members said that he believed that Mr. Jackson "has at some time molested a child, but in this case the evidence didn't prove it beyond reasonable doubt". That, combined with the fact that the prosecution bungled the case, and the prosecution's two "star" witnesses were simply not trustworthy, is why Jackson is a free man. This case isn't about the rich and famous getting away, it is about the prosecution dropping the ball.

Bugger it all...

Microsoft Buys Groove

QuickImage Category Gossip

From the land of WTF, we find that Microsoft is buying Groove Networks, and making Ray Ozzie the pimp-daddy CTO.

I had a gut feeling something was up when he (Ray) spoke at Lotusphere last January, but I honestly figured it was more along the lines of "Ozzie to join Goyal as senior advisor". I guess truth is always stranger than fiction.

Don't Panic

Category Gossip

I saw the teaser trailer for this over the weekend.  Walt Disney studios is releasing The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy next summer.  I can't wait. I wonder if The Schwartz is aware of this extremely cool bit of news.

I did a bit of checking, and have discovered that Sam Rockwell is playing Zaphod Beeblebrox.  I don't think they could have found a more perfect actor for the part.

Mos Def has been cast as Ford Prefect.  While at first this seems a bit odd (I always pictured Michael Palin as the perfect Prefect) bit of casting; the more I think about it, the the more I wonder why I imagined an alien as a British white guy.  Mos Def was very good in The Itailian Job, I don't see any reason why he won't do well in this role.

Who plays Arthur Dent you ask?  Why none other than Martin Freeman II.  If you've seen The Office (the real one, not the crappy American remake), or Shaun of the Dead (which, by the way, is one of the funniest films this year),  then I think you'll agree that he should fill this role quite handily.  Unless he just throws in the towel.

(my apologies, I couldn't help myself).

I'm from the Government, and I'm here to help you.

QuickImage Category Gossip

Busy, busy, busy. been really, really busy. Good news on the job front though. I am now (as of last Thursday) an official "gub'mint slug". Translated into English, this means that the U.S. Government decided that they would offer me a real, official position to take the place of the contract position I have held for the last 2 years.
